A job seeker who doesn’t set goals is missing out on a vital element in his or her job search, according to career coach Tom Killen.
Killen said research has repeatedly shown that the most successful people are pushed and driven to success by psychological factors, superceding other factors such as intelligence, wealth or contacts.
He said that the will to accomplish, the inner voice saying, “I will do this,” is vital to success in job seeking. He said it reflects an inner commitment to accomplish something that is important to you.
Killen said that setting goals in order to make that determination work for you involves several steps. First, a job seeker should have a brainstorming session to clearly define the ultimate goal – what kind of job, where and what salary range, for example. These should be specifically listed – written down.
Then the candidate should list intermediate, short-term goals that will help accomplish that aim. These should be broken down into small increments, even daily goals that the job hunter can track and see the progress he or she is making.
By being specific about what he or she wants to accomplish and creating a plan to get there, Killen said the chances of success are much greater.
