Good Staffing Firm Helps Job Search

Tuesday, November 25th, 2008
While job searching can be challenging and nerve wracking, a good staffing company can provide some assistance and some peace of mind. According to experts at Computerworld, a journey that can be frustrating even in great economic conditions becomes even more challenging as the economy tightens and jobs become scarcer. Job hunters may be motivated to look at a staffing agency because they are currently unemployed, or because they have concerns about their company’s future stability. With the current rash of layoffs, some employees feel better about being prepared for an eventuality rather than waiting for the shoe to fall. A staffing firm will generally have a client visit once to take skills tests and fill out paperwork. With a quality staffing firm, following that first visit, their team of professionals begin working to find a suitable match for the skills of the job seeker. The best staffing firms have established relationships with employers and may know about jobs that aren’t yet advertised. Also, such firms generally have training to upgrade your resume, highlight skills that employers are currently seeking, or choose your most marketable strengths. A staffing firm can also help you avoid taking a position that is a dead end or career detour.

Goal Setting Indispensable to Job Search

Tuesday, November 25th, 2008
A job seeker who doesn’t set goals is missing out on a vital element in his or her job search, according to career coach Tom Killen. Killen said research has repeatedly shown that the most successful people are pushed and driven to success by psychological factors, superceding other factors such as intelligence, wealth or contacts. He said that the will to accomplish, the inner voice saying, “I will do this,” is vital to success in job seeking. He said it reflects an inner commitment to accomplish something that is important to you. Killen said that setting goals in order to make that determination work for you involves several steps. First, a job seeker should have a brainstorming session to clearly define the ultimate goal – what kind of job, where and what salary range, for example. These should be specifically listed – written down. Then the candidate should list intermediate, short-term goals that will help accomplish that aim. These should be broken down into small increments, even daily goals that the job hunter can track and see the progress he or she is making. By being specific about what he or she wants to accomplish and creating a plan to get there, Killen said the chances of success are much greater.

Be Willing to Accept Lower Level Jobs

Monday, November 24th, 2008
While proponents of immigration reform say that we need to bring in workers from other countries to do jobs Americans won’t do, is this really true? And if Americans won’t accept low-level jobs, why not? Paul Facella, who wrote the book Everything I Know About Business I Learned at McDonald’s said that McDonald’s – a company that many workers consider “beneath” them – has created more millionaires than any other American company, especially female and minority millionaires. So Facella recommends taking a look at a lower level job and see if it might be of help to you later in your career. He pointed out some benefits you can get from working at a job lower on the prestige scale. First, you’re free to ask all kinds of questions. If you are curious and inquisitve, you could learn more from questions than you would in an MBA class. Develop your working style. Always work hard, and refuse to be satisfied with “good enough.” Those traits are important to an entrepreneur or an executive as well as a lobby cleaner. Refining relationship skills like listening, solving conflicts and taking changes in stride are other important skills a lower-level job gives you an opportunity to practice.

Don’t Be Discouraged by Lack of Response in Job Hunting

Monday, November 24th, 2008
Job Hunters may become frustrated and discouraged by the numbers of resumes they send out in comparison to the numbers of responses, particularly interview appointments, they receive back. However, career coach Michael Melcher said job seekers should not become discouraged by such things. Job hunters often underestimate how busy those they are trying to reach are. He said what is the top priority for the job seeker may be on the B list for the person they are trying to reach. Melcher said there are professional ways to handle a non-response, including the use of the old fashioned telephone rather than relying on email and internet communication. The personal touch is often welcome. He also suggests that one way to reach past the secretary handling the resumes is to send your employment packet via. FedEx or Express Mail, giving it higher priority and often landing it on the desk of the person you really want to reach. Melcher said the most important tip is to keep going and not let the disappointments stop you from continuing your search. A nonresponse does not mean you having nothing of value to add, it just means you may not fit that particular company at this time, or that your resume and/or cover letter need some fine tuning.

Be Flexible in Job Search

Monday, November 24th, 2008
Although the economy is going through a very rough stretch, experts say college graduates will still be able to find work. They just won’t be able to do it the same way. Workforce development workers at the Missouri Career Center said the job market has not been as volatile as the financial market. Development supervisor Cathy Collop said that the jobs are “out there” and available. However, the market is more competitive and job applicants should be well prepared before they apply for a specific job. Collop said that there are still lots of jobs listed through the Missouri Career Center, and she expects it is the same for other states. The jobs she is seeing most frequently are jobs in health care, computers, education and science. Jobs are at all different levels in these fields, so applicants should have a broad base of training and plan to be flexible. Collop said some graduates think they will just go out and get a great job with high pay right away. This just doesn’t generally happen, she said. She said applicants should be prepared to start working for entry level wages, and work their way up.

Using Networking to Find a Job

Friday, November 21st, 2008
There are a ton of people out there that have used effective networking techniques in order to find a job, build their company, or expand the opportunities of their current occupation. Many people are familiar with the term networking; however not as many of them know how to effectively put networking techniques to use. This is why we have put together a little bit of information that will teach you how to use networking to your benefit and to ultimately find a job. The basic idea of networking is to exchange phone numbers and business information with people that you come in contact with in a business situation. The main idea of this is to make it known which services you provide. If you are a lawyer for example, and you hand your card out to every business associate you meet, you will have effectively increased the chances of those people using your services next time they need those services. This is also an effective way to become memorable among employers. Instead of being just another resume, you will be able to leave a lasting impression on a potential employer who might in return suggest you for a position that has opened.

The Importance of Gaining New Skills

Friday, November 21st, 2008
There are many people these days that are worried about the state of the economy and more importantly their ability to find high paying work in the near future. This is because there has been a huge decrease in the amount of available jobs, especially for people that are not highly skilled. This is the reason that there are a ton of people that have decided to return to school to advance their education and acquire new skills that will eventually increase their job opportunities. In today’s society, although there may be a decrease in jobs for many different fields, there is always a need for highly skilled professionals that have knowledge of cutting edge technologies. In order to compete for jobs in today’s marketplace, an understanding of technology will vastly increase your chances of nailing a job. This is the reason that many people have opted to return to school to specialize in a certain technology that is in high demand. The fact that IT professionals are being hired at record rates is proof enough that jobs in technology are bound to be the hot new trend for 2009 and beyond.

2009 Fiscal year good for recruiting

Friday, November 21st, 2008
Continuing the effectiveness of the 2008 recruiting drive, the beginning of fiscal year 2009 is meeting and exceeding goals already. October began the new fiscal year, and the Army, Marines, Air Force and Navy all exceeded recruitment goals. The other thing that is impressive about the numbers is the quality of the recruits. While only 75% of the nation as a whole has a high school diploma in that same age range, the military touted 92% of their recruits had high school diplomas or higher. Those are pretty impressive numbers. It means the military is getting the best and the brightest. There were concerns that the fiscal 2009 numbers may not be on target since the 2008 totals broke a record. It appears as though the military is well on its way to breaking yet another record with the year 2009. 2008 saw the highest number of recruits since 2005, which is a very good sign. Increased efforts to involve parents have made a positive impact on their encouraging their young people to join the service. It is very encouraging to know that so many young people still want to serve to protect the country they love.

Jobseekers Get Creative

Friday, November 21st, 2008
There are many jobseekers that have been turning to unconventional methods of job hunting in order to remain competitive in today’s economy. The fact of the matter is that most companies these days are unable to sustain the rate at which they use to hire new employees and this has forced jobseekers to get creative in order to have a chance of nailing the job. Many jobseekers have realized that since there are so many companies that have decreased hiring that they must do everything possible in order to stand out from the rest of the applications. In order to do this, many job seekers have utilized techniques that might have been considered the wrong thing to do. For instance, some of these people have been using one technique that involves sending multiple resumes to the same department. In the past, employers may have frowned upon this. However, recently employers have recognized this as just an attempt from some that is serious about the job and many people credit this technique for finding a job. This technique is used simply to stand out and increase you chances of being recognized among a pile of resumes.

Job Hunting

Thursday, November 20th, 2008
There are many different techniques that people use when job hunting, however there are a few that have proven to be a little bit more effective than others and have been helping people all over the world find jobs. Many people that are searching for jobs often get frustrated with the process as it can be quite a tedious and draining task to meet with a ton of employers when you know the majority will not hire you. However, the most important thing you can do is make sure that you are full prepared. The first thing that one must always thinking about when job hunting is the clothing they choose for meeting employers. You will not be able to do much for your credentials when an interview is just around the corner but you can always invest in proper clothing that will give employers an impression of the type of professionalism that you will end up bringing to the company. Many people are under the impression that their resume will speak for itself. In the economic situation that the country is in and the lack of hiring that all markets are experiencing, it is extremely important to do everything that you can to give yourself an advantage over the next candidate.
